She is the empathic one on which others can rely, she is strong (working in the cafê like an adult), self confident and always smiling, no matter how dire the Situation is. Always cheering up everyone and being the emotional backbone for the Gang. But i still think the Encounter Mallow has is one of the best executed Emotional Scenes in SM (right up there with Stoutlands Death). I know some people really didnt like the sudden introduction of mallows mom (and her death) in the Story without hinting or mentioning it prior. Well that was longer than expected: TL DR: Mallows arc works really well and Torracat/Stoutlands doesnt That's about what I got from my limited understanding of what was said in the episode. Mallow got to reconcile with her mum, and found a Shaymin who wandered by to the blooming Gracidea flowers, and she took it with her. Gladion and Lillie learn that their Dad isn't dead and is alive, somewhere in the world.
It was a trial for Hapu to see if she was ready to be an Island Queen, and she passed. Hapu went to stop Tapu Fini and return Ash and the others back into the world of the living. Lillie and Gladion tries to meet their dad but couldn't. Stoutland being impressed by Torracat tries to teach him a new move, fireblast. Torracat got to meet Stoutland and show him what he has learned, after Stoutland had passed away. Mallow and her Tsareena got to met her mother and they both share a touching moment of gratitude of all the things they done, which allowed the nearby Gracidea flowers to bloom. Tapu Fini saw Mallow confess her grief and made it possible for Mallow to see her dead mum.Įveryone else got caught up in the fog that allowed them to meet their lost loved ones. Mallow states her regrets that her final words to her mother before she died, was a childish tantrum she didn't mean, that involved the words "I hate you." And also being ungrateful to her mum for all the things she had done for her and her family. They learn that it was because of Tapu Fini's power that allowed them to meet the dead, but if they go chasing after the dead, there's a chance they'll be trapped in the spirit world with no way back into the world of the living, so they need to be careful. They learn that the old man is the previous Island king that had resigned and passed away, and is also Hapu's grandfather. Kaki and Ash finds a magazine that had the same old man that gave Kaki the flying Z-Crystal, for completing Tapu Fini's trial. The battle between Ash and Hapu is going to be a 1v1 battle.įrom what I can gather from my bare minimum knowledge of Japanese: It makes sense for the show to finally give Torracat some screentime in this arc after being generally neglected outside of the Battle Royal episodes, and what better way than to have it learn a new move so it can take on Hapu in the next episod.
There are a good number of narrative hoops to jump through to somehow get from “Torracat wants to meet Stoutland” to “Torracat learns Fire Blast”, and I can’t help feeling like something was missing in between. That is because, in my opinion, the meeting between those two has got to be the weakest part of the episode, vacuum or otherwise. Some will notice that I have yet to mention Torracat meeting Stoutland. In a vacuum, this episode works somewhat Mao’s bit centred around the theme of gratitude got the most focus in this episode, but we do also see a resolution to Hapu’s personal character development (truncated tho it was) and a possible hint to a potential Mohn arc.īut the problems comes with the lens switched over to view the big picture having to share airtime with three other plotlines means Hapu getting acknowledgement to become the Island Kahuna ends up being shafted for time, and it’s a stretch of logic to suggest that the Shaymin Mao got at the end of her meeting with her mom will be of any relevancy in future episodes. We see this in Mao’s moments with her mom, we see this in Gladion’s desire to meet his dad, we see this with Hapu and her grandfather, and to a lesser extent we see this with Torracat demonstrating its growth to Stoutland.
This episode is thematically centred around the idea of “unfinished business”, that there have been words left unsaid, deeds not yet done, things that have been left hanging by a loss of a loved one. That makes this episode a bit harder to review, because in a vacuum this episode is okay, but it exposes some of the series-wide weaknesses and that brings it down in my book. By my past reviews, I would like to think that I have kind of established myself as the “big picture” kind of reviewer in that I look at the broader themes of this show (for what its themes are worth).
